ValCelMat
START : 01/10/2024
END : 30/09/2028
Among the various polymers extracted from non-food renewable resources, cellulose is the most abundant polymer on Earth, biobased, biodegradable and recyclable.
The three regions involved in the project (Hauts-de-France, Wallonia and Flanders) have large quantities and diversity of cellulose resources, thanks to their climate, soil quality and specialist industries (plant fractionation, paper mills, biorefineries, etc.).
The ValCelMat project aims to exploit cellulose in new applications (packaging, textiles and additives for bioplastics).
Cellulose will be chemically modified to give it new functionalities (moisture and fire resistance) while retaining its good intrinsic properties (absence of toxicity and biodegradation).
The modifications will be carried out using innovative, environmentally-friendly batch and continuous reactive extrusion processes.
MISSIONS OF MATERIA NOVA :
Materia Nova will be involved in tasks relating to the design and development of substrates and functionalised cellulose fibres, by chemical modification in the reactor and then by reactive extrusion, to transpose batch reactions to continuous processes.
