Project

Up-Plastics

Start of the project: 01-01-2023
End of project: 31-12-2025

General Objective:

UP-PLASTICS aims to integrate eco-design and circularity throughout the entire value chain of plastic materials for construction and eco-housing, from their conception and formulation to recycling, following a circular and ecological approach. Eco-products (such as natural polymers and animal biomass) and industrial waste from buildings (such as polyurethane foams, cables, and PVC) are utilized to manufacture eco-designed materials for the construction industry.

Within this portfolio, the UP-PLASTICS project seeks to develop bio-additives and sustainable polymer materials by valorizing lignocellulosic biomass and waste from the construction sector. The project places significant emphasis on developing innovative and environmentally friendly processes for recycling and producing these additives and materials.

More specifically, MATERIA NOVA focuses on:

  • Developing synthons from lignocellulosic biomass for the production of (bio)flame retardants and phenolic foams.
  • Chemically recycling thermal insulation polyurethane foams using green processes and valorizing oligomers.
  • Assessing environmental impacts and studying the acceptability of the new materials developed in UP-PLASTICS within existing recycling channels.
