Sandwich material and structure
The aim of the SMS project is to develop cutting-edge technologies for the production of larger, lighter, composite sandwich structures with an equivalent level of stability on an industrial scale. It is planned to use composite materials based on carbon fibre reinforced polymers (CFRP) to form the honeycomb core of the sandwich structure. The faces of the composite panels, known as skins in industrial jargon, can also be made of composite materials or other materials depending on the application. At the interface between the skins and the honeycomb, other new technologies (relating to gluing techniques in particular) will be developed in order to gain both lightness and stability. Among the innovations retained, it is a question of using new gluing techniques, based on new materials or new processes, aiming to limit the influence of the glue between the honeycomb and the faces (skins of composite panels).
Objectives and missions of Materia Nova
Within the consortium, Materia Nova carried out the feasibility study for the development of an innovative adhesive solution between cfrp honeycomb and Zerodur in mirrors (space applications).
