Project

SAFE

The project aims to

  • Surface modification of Ti and Mg biomaterials using plasma processes texturing at micrometric and nanometric scales to facilitate osseointegration and limit the risks of infection and inflammation.
  • Optimize operating conditions to meet biomedical specifications for degradability, mechanical durability and biocompatibility.
  • Providing a cross-border characterization platform.

The SAFE project relies on a consortium whose skills complement each other perfectly to carry out this project and develop Plasma surface treatments on light alloys and characterize their tribological, corrosion resistance in environments representative of the biomedical field, osseointegration, antibacterial and morphological properties.

The operators bring together expertise in biomaterial processing (UMONS), laboratory and pilot-scale applications (UMONS, MaNo), chemical, physico-chemical and tribological characterization (ULille UPHF, CRITT) and biological properties (UMONS, UPHF). In addition, several operators have local contacts with players in the healthcare sector (CHULille...) and companies in the biomedical (CRITT) and surface treatment fields.
The respective contributions of the operators will be as follows:
UMONS: Project management, organization of communication and awareness-raising activities for target audiences, implementation of plasma surface treatments (dry and wet routes) on biomaterials and biocompatibility and electrochemical characterization tests to study degradation mechanisms in physiological environments.
Materia Nova: Pilot-scale implementation of surface treatments on real parts and characterization of corrosion/biocorrosion of surface treatments.
-UULille: Characterization of morphologies and mechanical properties of treated surfaces.
-UPHF: Mechanical, tribological, biological and antibacterial characterization.
CRITT: Mechanical characterization of surface-treated parts and chemical characterization.
